I am back to bringing you a funny post warriors as these few stories certainly made me chuckle. We could all use a good laugh or two despite the “seriousness” of life sometimes. I’ve already shared my story about the Ultimate Warrior’s music of “Unstable” and all those pianos but these few belong to other Superstars. Hmmm… do I go way back or start with something recent? I’ll stick to the present first.
If any of you readers read “My Warrior Therapy,” you’ll recall a story I shared about my wonderful physical therapist. He was sent from the gods to me and am so grateful for his work. One day as I was walking down the long corridor to his office, I heard music playing. He usually has a playlist going and for some reason, I knew this song. It was the King’s entrance music! Take your pick– Harley Race or Jerry Lawler. Finally, I looked up the title. It’s called: “The Great Gate of Kiev.” I never knew that. I wanted to say: “Well, that’s certainly one Royal greeting!” but I didn’t. I only laughed to myself picturing both guys the Ultimate Warrior wrestled at different times during his career. FYI- that music is LONG! I probably heard it in its entirety.
We always chat for a bit first before therapy would begin as this music went on and on. It took so much for me to not laugh while lying on my stomach across the table. We need to learn something new and that day, it was hearing the King’s music. π€΄π»π€΄π»Listening to all of it made me finally find out the title. I laughed all the way home. I don’t need to see my therapist anymore (although ya never know) but will miss our spirited conversations. Great guy, great day.
The second wrestling theme music concerns a beautiful wooden music box given to my daughter as a baby. My brother-in-law used to travel globally and would always have gifts for both kids when we’d see him. My son got a spaceship (or should I say rocket ship?!) music box that opened and he could see all the astronauts inside. We all loved this and it was so cool. Well, my baby girl’s has Matryoshka dolls on the inside. Most probably know that is Russian. The dolls spin around when you wind it up and it plays the Russian National Anthem. My BIL went there a lot. It also has pink roses all over it. I think I always loved it more than her. Did I remember or connect this to let’s say Nikolai Volkoff at the time? Nope, not at all. Too far back in my memory then.
I would wind it after nap time as she’d stand up in her crib, point at them high on a shelf and say: “Mommy, dollies?” She’d move her little head from side to side and click her tongue like the music. It was the cutest thing ever and this continued for quite a while with her. I loved our routine and of course the pink doll is my favorite. It now sits in my hutch far away from her room that used to contain little girl stuff. She’s 15 now. I will always have that memory and it wasn’t until more recently how I finally connected the music! Oh, the laughs that came out of me. πThe Ultimate Warrior did wrestle Nikolai too as I always remembered he could never sing the whole song before getting beat up by his opponent. I know there were other Russian wrestlers but N.V. was at the top. Nikolai was really Yugoslavian so I wonder how long it took him to memorize that song about “Mother Russia?” π€ I still wind the music box sometimes nostalgically humming along and saying: “Mommy, dollies?”
I was kinda hoping for a three count with these stories but today as Jesse Ventura had said during WMVI: “it’s just a two!” Hopefully, I brought you all some laughs as well but am sure you have your funny connectors or stories too.
Everyone has those iconic things that define us and for the wrestlers, it was their theme music. We all knew who was coming out when their music or song started. It’s the same today. I always thought some were so creative as it seemed to capture their personality or gimmick- despite an anthem. Even though the singing ones weren’t necessarily my favorite, I gotta always give them credit for doing that. It became so synonymous with a character for years and you’d never forget it. I bet you all have your favorites too. Of course I’m biased ( can you guess?) but some would really get me all excited just to hear a few notes. We know many that used a traditional song but some were created originally like “Unstable.” It’s perhaps not as original today like it was of that era but as long as it works and fans relate, that’s what matters.
From “The Great Gate of Kiev” to the Russian National Anthem, I will always remember those themes for specific times in my life very fondly. It doesn’t matter if it’s a therapist’s office or my girl’s bedroom, I’ll take it all. I finally did record myself playing “Unstable” on my daughter’s keyboard. Can’t believe I screwed it up at the end, ugh! Once again though, it also will never be forgotten. I taught myself those three piano notes as a teen and can still play it today. I know some of you are either singing those songs or playing them in your head right now, aren’t ya? I’m right there with you. ππ»ββοΈβ€οΈ
